In an Australian first, the Socceroos game on May 24th against the New Zealand All Whites was the first 3D programming to hit Australian TV screens. A fitting tribute to Australia’s premier football team, the friendly match at the MCG was a great send-off to the team as they leave to begin their World Cup campaign in South Africa.

The game was captured using 5 Element Technica Camera Rigs – 5 at pitch level, and 1 in the stands. Inition worked with Panavision to pull together the 3D camera systems and crewing as well as consulting on the 3D graphics and convergence pulling during the match.

The signals from the cameras were mixed live in the OB van provided by Global Television and transmitted live to air. Inition’s SB-1 Stereobrain Processors were used for monitoring and encoding the signal for broadcast. The broadcast also made use of the brand new Sony MPE-200’s tracking and stabilization boxes ahead of their debut on the World Cup in South Africa. Used on most camera positions, the MPE-200’s stabilize zoom tracking for the rigs with variable focal lengths.
