3D African Wildlife Pilot: “Distant Thunder”

World-renowned wildlife filmmakers Deeble & Stone have partnered with Inition to co-produce a 3D wildlife pilot in Africa. The shoot took place in Kenya and was produced in association with equipment manufacturer P+S TECHNIK. The pilot is narrated by Sir Ian Holm and will be screened for the first time on 1st June 2010 at Dimension 3, Seine-Saint-Denis, France.

The stereoscopic production is a pilot for Deeble & Stone’s forthcoming theatrical film ‘Distant Thunder’. Set against spectacular Kenyan landscapes, the film follows a family of African elephants as they struggle to survive when drought strikes their homeland. Filming took place in Kenya’s Tsavo East and Amboseli National Parks and features a wide variety of filming techniques, from macro to hand-held gyro-stabilised to scenic time-lapses whilst following the elephant family on their epic journey.

It was produced in association with P+S TECHNIK who supplied a SI-2K camera, a 3D Standard Mirror rig and a OneBox DIT workstation. Silicon Imaging supplied an SI-3D camera system and Stereotec a side-by-side rig. Initial post and stereo adjustment was conducted on Iridas Speedgrade at Inition, before finishing post production in Spain at Apuntolapospo. The sound design and mix were produced by Wounded Buffalo, with original score by Guy Michelmore.

LG 3D 'Rare Butterflies'

Project: 'Rare Butterflies' 3D Cinema and TV Ad
Client: Framestore
Brand: LG
What we provided: 3D Camera system, crew, stereography.

Project: 'Rare Butterflies' 3D Cinema and TV Ad
We provided: SI-2K 3D Camera system and crew including stereographer.

As part of LG’s multi million pound 3DTV campaign, Inition helped Framestore shoot a 3D cinema advert which aims to show film-lovers how the 3D experience can be recreated in their living rooms.

The campaign for Mindshare was directed by The IT Crowd star Richard Ayoade. It features comedy duo Tim Key and his sidekick Lloyd Woolf who take viewers on a brief history of 3D through to latest developments and what the future holds.

The advert is a tongue-in-cheek take on current formulaic 3D showreels and starts with Woolf dressed up as Godzilla destroying a cardboard city below him. The ad then pans through other popular 3D viewing genres such as football and rare butterflies, before ending in a stage set front room with Key and Woolf on the sofa and the strap line "Bringing the magic of 3D home with LG".

The advert was shot in one take on Inition's SI-2K/Neutron camera system. Inition's Andy Millns was the stereographer on-set. Post-production at Framestore included adding VFX to the live action sequence which was on-lined by respected VFX artist and post-production consultant David Cox.

The brief was to design and 3D print a lightweight but strong articulated rig capable of holding a camera for taking panormaic images while flying hundreds of metres up on a kite! Simple: use a ProJet 3000 3D printer from 3D Systems to 'print' the prototype in 3D. The camera would have to be held securely to the kite line while allowing it to be pointed in any direction and take hundreds of pictures fully automatically.

Inition Produces Live Six Nations Rugby Broadcast in 3D

Cinemas around the country are to screen England’s home RBS Six Nations games live in 3-D. Archibald Ingall Stretton commissioned 3D specialists Inition to produce the matches which are set to become the largest ever UK sports events to be broadcast live in 3D.

Forty Odeon and Cineworld cinemas will screen the matches, beginning with England’s official centenary game, against Wales on February 6, as part of a deal with O2, the England sponsor. The match against Ireland on February 27 will also be screened live in 3-D. Tickets go on sale from January 29.

Using the latest 3D camera technology, the matches will be captured from seven camera positions to provide a comprehensive view of the game and will include replays, match statistics and on-screen graphics. Inition is working with outside broadcast experts SIS Live and will use 3D 'Quasar' rigs from Element Technica for the shoot. Broadcast graphics specialists Wurmsers are creating bespoke stereoscopic graphics for the game. The BBC is the UK TV rights holder for the 6 Nations – played between England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy – and will assist O2 in the broadcast.

Inition has worked on a number of 3D productions from football and ice hockey to track and music events. Inition were also the 3D experts behind the 3D transmissions of England’s clash with Scotland at Murrayfield, in 2008, as part of a 3D test for the BBC.

Stream Worldwide approached Inition to create a 3D PowerPoint presentation for Pernod Ricard UK’s top selling brand label Absolut. The presentation was for their annual sales and marketing conference which was held at Twickenham Rugby Stadium in September 2009.

Lee Spooner headed up Inition’s team to create the stereoscopic 3D CGI content based around the latest ad campaign for Absolut. The creative featured a 3D Absolut vodka bottle, paper animated lanterns and animated text. These were then rendered out as stereoscopic 3D video files and integrated into the latest cutting edge 3D power point software: S3D Presenter. James Marks and Inition’s technical team projected this onto our spectral 240 3D stereoscopic screen (426x320cm) from our duality 3D projection system.

S3D presenter software is a high-end dynamic 3D PowerPoint presentation add on that allows slides to be played back in real time and integrated with pre rendered 3D video files. Inition is one of the first companies in the UK to offer this service.

Client: Komodo Films & Fu Works
What we did: Consultancy, Crew, Stereography

Brian Yuzna’s much anticipated 3D monster film Amphibious has wrapped and is now in post production in Belgium at Galaxy Studios. The Netherlands/ Belgian/ Singaporean co-production will be the first 3D movie ever made in Southeast Asia.

Inition’s Asia Pacific office worked with Komodo Films providing consultancy on pre-production, storyboards, camera and monitoring equipment and post-production. The shoot took place over 2 months in Jakarta where Inition’s Head of Production for Asia Pacific Markus Stone was the lead Stereographer and headed the 3D department.

Markus commented: “This was a complex 3D shoot, and was produced in often challenging conditions including the Javanese jungle, on board a boat and in a studio that was a humid 36 degrees every day with the air conditioners turned on. It just goes to show that great 3D is possible on a budget.”

By downloading special software from www.audi.co.uk and printing out a 'MagicSymbol' the same special effects can be replicated at home on webcam-equipped computers. Users simply hold up a special 'MagicSymbol' printed in the A1 brochure or downloadable from the internet, and the technology recognises this and merges an A1 model into real footage in real-time.

Users can rotate the car, expand or contract it, roll it forwards and backwards and pan right into the interior by simply moving the MagicSymbol pad in relation to the web cam. The technology will enable customers to get a real 'feel' for the A1, before it hits showrooms in October.

Aviva Stadium 3D Experience

To mark the opening of Dublin’s new Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road, Inition helped Irish production company vStream create an interactive 3D video experience for fans attending the stadium.

To create the personalised 3D point-of-view experience, Inition provided steadicam-mounted 3D camera systems and technical crew to shoot a series of clips at matches including scenes from the changing room, running onto to the pitch, through to actual game play.

The 3D Experience takes place place in a mobile simulator with 14 booths which will be at the stadium during match days and travel around the country attending major sporting events. Fans can upload an image of themselves and be featured in the 3D experience which plays on a 24?inch Hyundai 3D LCD screens also supplied by Inition.

The interactive game places the viewer in the heart of the game – as if they were a professional football or rugby player - and recreates the rush of playing in front of a full capacity 50,000 Aviva Stadium audience.

Project: Bait 3D Feature Film
What we provided: Consultancy, Crew, Stereography

Production has just wrapped on Australia’s forthcoming 3D action-thriller Bait. The film follows a freak tsunami which hits a small town on the Gold Coast, trapping people in a flooded underground supermarket with a pack of man-eating sharks. Directed by Kimble Rendall (Matrix Reloaded), the film stars some of Australia’s top talent, including Julian Mcmahon (Nip Tuck, Fantastic Four) and Xavier Samuel (Twilight; Eclipse).

Inition’s Asia Pacific office provided consultancy on the production pipeline, camera and monitoring setup, storyboard and production aspects and headed up the 3D department during principal photography.

The film was shot using two Element Technica Quasar rigs with Red MX Cameras and one Element Technica Neutron with SI-2K cameras for the underwater scenes. The standard configuration was to have one Quasar on the crane, one at water level in a splash box and the Neutron as a separate unit in the studio next door.

When ThingLab Australia first heard about Boags piping beer from Tasmania to Melbourne via the Great Tasmanian Beer Pipeline, we thought.... great! When we discovered that the whole idea was a in fact a promotion, ThingLab was equally excited to be involved in scanning a sculpture of the Boags logo for Mother’s Art.

We scanned the sculpture using our Mephisto Extreme 3D scanning system and turned the job around in less than a week. The data was fed into a CNC machine which then milled the full scale 3D logo from craftwood. The final pipe was constructed from wood, but looked for all the world like a solid steel monster. Bring on the beer!

British artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s 3D video installation has been post-produced by Inition and visual effects specialist Prime Focus. Inspired by The Man from M.A.R.S. (1922) – one of the first 3D films ever produced – Radio Mania: An Abandoned Work exhibits at the BFI Southbank Gallery in London from 8th May to 11th July 2009.

Radio Mania: An Abandoned Work consists of a two-screen 3D video installation with multi-dimensional ambisonic sound. A staged rehearsal which featured actors including Kevin Eldon, Caroline Catz, Terrence Hardiman and Fenella Fielding was shot by Inition with the latest 3D video technology. This captured the actors, directors and musicians working on the script and score. This film of the rehearsal is then locked on repeat in the installation, creating a place of uncertainty within the gallery.

Inition converts bestseller to 3D

Following on from the international success of Daniel Lalic’s tongue in cheek book Where’s Bin Laden, New Holland Publishing were looking for another angle to help promote the book for the holiday season. Their answer: talk to Inition about converting all 18 colour plates into 3D. On an incredibly tight 12 day deadline, Inition rotoscoped all the intricately detailed characters to create a hand painted depthmap. “We’d often end up with 75 to 100 layers on a single image,” says Markus Stone, Inition’s stereographer on the project; “then we’d have to paint each one the correct shade of grey according to where the layer was to be positioned in 3D space – white for objects that are close, black for objects that are far away. The resulting depthmap is then used to shift the pixels of the original image to create the second eye of a left right pair”.

One of the key aspects of the job was to make the book immediately accessible to people without needing to wear the glasses – therefore it also had to work in 2D. Colour reproduction was therefore a big issue, as was the separation between the images. “We found we had to strike a balance,” says Stone. ”On the one hand a really deep 3D effect can look great with your glasses on, but as soon as you take them off, all you see is a blurry double image. We had to be very careful to have enough separation to give good depth, while also enabling someone without glasses to connect with what’s on the page”.

Where’s Bin Laden is now available in all good bookstores and has already sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

Inition Launch 3D HD Video Processing Unit ‘StereoBrain’ at BV Expo 2009

Broadcast Video Expo 2009, Earl's Court, London, 17 February 2009: Today is the unveiling of the StereoBrain Processor (SB-1), a new 3D HD video processing unit developed for use in stereoscopic 3D production and broadcast. The StereoBrain Processor (SB-1) is the first in a range of 3D processors being developed jointly by broadcast video experts NuMedia Technology and stereoscopic 3D specialists Inition.

The SB-1 model is designed to allow live viewing of a stereoscopic camera pair or other 3D video source on any of the current breed of 3D televisions (Hyundai, Samsung, JVC). This enables live 3D monitoring or 3D viewing in post-production environments from any 3D pair of HD-SDI sources.

The SB-1 outputs the pair of images via a single DVI/HDMI signal in interlaced or side-by-side configuration, both of which are common 3D formats. It can also output overlayed left/right on a standard 2D HD monitor. Both side-by-side and mirror/beam-splitter rigs are also supported with the latter via a built in a vertical flip function.

Future models of the StereoBrain Processor (SB-2, SB-3) will launch in Q2, 2009 and will support a range of sophisticated 3D video processing functions including the ability to shift convergence live and additional features to align and monitor stereoscopic 3D sources. The SB-1 is being demonstrated with a live 3D camera system on the NuMedia Technology and Inition stand K36.

Andy Millns, Director at Inition commented: "3D has always been technically challenging from acquisition and post-production through to distribution. Current video hardware was not designed to handle 3D images but ability to to view and manipulate 3D pairs of HD sources is an essential tool for 3D production. The StereoBrain Processor allows you to monitor and manipulate 3D on a wide range of 3D and non-3D monitors and TVs. This represents a significant improvement in the 3D production process."

When insanely talented animation company Busty Kelp decided it was time to add motion capture to their considerable range of skills, they contacted Inition for help in getting the right system.

Inition's Jeff Ferguson advised on latest developments in the field (independent of manufacturer hyperbole) and arranged suitable demos that resulted in them opting for the state-of-the-art Animazoo IGS-190 motion capture suit.

Paul Smith's Busty Kelp, which is associated with Aardman Animations, is showing off the first fruits of the IGS-190's realistic motion with a smashing character study of a Wood Imp, which can be viewed at Busty Kelp's website (click projects > Wood Imp).
Cadbury Dairy Milk goes 3D

Working with Drum PHD and Fallon, Inition helped create Cadbury’s first ever 3D ad. The high profile ad spot screens prior to James Cameron’s 3D epic ‘Avatar’ in over 200 3D cinema screens nationwide.

Using Cadbury Dairy Milk’s recent ‘Zingalo’ ad, which celebrates the chocolate brand’s fair trade credentials, Inition converted the footage into a fabulous 3D Stereoscopic version.

The process of converting the existing 2D film into 3D was turned around in record time. The Zingolo ad lent itself well to 3D conversion because it features a head emerging from a garage and in 3D it appears actually to float right in front of the cinema audience creating a very impressive cinema experience.

ThingLab were approached by Liberty Bell Productions to scan the head of comedy legend John Cleese, and to produce a 3D model, for gadget show 'Batteries Not Included', now being broadcast on Dave.

Said Figs Jackman of Liberty Bell: 'ThingLab project-managed the whole process, from visiting the live shoot with John Cleese and carrying out the scans in between other shoots, stitching and finalising the scan data, printing the head and post processing to our requirements. They also gave us permission to film the process so that we could televise it. Given the time constraints and the limited information that ThingLab were given, I am very impressed with the end result'.

The whole process has been filmed and will be broadcast on Dave at 10pm, Thursday November 20th 2008. Watch out for the show. This is fascinating technology and well worth seeing.

Detailed maps have been used to produce a 3D model of the surface ruptures related to the cataclysmic earthquake that devastated the Italian Apennine region.

The mapping project, part of the wider earthquake relief-effort in the UK and internationally, is using the ZPrinter 650 to create colour 3D representations of the regional geology. The results of the project will, it’s hoped, help to improve the understanding of quakes, their timing and likely magnitude. Thinglab managed the installation and training, and provided after-sales technical support.

Inition helps EPICS preserve the past

When the EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) project were looking to scan artefacts for the Auckland war memorial museum, they came to Inition’s Thinglab for the latest in 3D scanning technology. The group aims to digitise artefacts “for the purpose of digital archiving, cultural and historical preservation and public education”.

Using an MVT scanner and Rapidform combination, the EPICS team came up with a novel way of squeezing even more out the system. By coupling the scanner head to a KUKA industrial robot arm, the team were able to improve further the quality of the meshes produced by the system. “Moulage's auto-alignment eliminates most position errors between scans. The scans from the sweeps are also finely aligned in Rapidform. Markers such as rulers are placed under or around the artefact to help with this alignment.
Ford C-MAX Launch Outdoor Augmented Reality Campaign

Project: Ford C-MAX AR Campaign
Client: Grand Visual | Ogilvy | Ford
What we provided: AR technology, creative/technical consultancy, tracking and real-time graphics software development

Ford of Britain has launched an augmented reality campaign featuring the new 7 seat Grand C-MAX car on JCDecaux mall 6 Sheet screens. The campaign allows people to handle and explore a 3D "virtual" model of the car on screen and in the palm of their hand.

The campaign was created by Ogilvy & Mather in London and Grand Visual, and uses Inition’s augmented reality software to merge real life footage with the 3D photo-real version of the Grand C-MAX on screen. Users interact with the car simply by holding their hands up to the screen. Virtual buttons allow the user to choose the colour of the car, open doors, fold the seats flat, turn the car 360 degrees and select demos of the car’s key features such as Active Park Assist.

This is the first outdoor augmented reality campaign to use 3D depth imaging technology in the UK. Rather than using a printed marker or symbol as a point of reference for interaction, a Panasonic D-Imager camera (similar to the Kinect) accurately measures the depth of the scene and tracks users' hands in real-time, ignoring the rest of the shopping mall. This means the user interface is based on natural movement and hand gestures allowing any passerby to immediately start interacting with the screen content.

Inition Adds SensAble FreeForm to 3D Solutions Portfolio

Product: Inition expands portfolio to include SensAble FreeForm to 3D Modelling System
Client: SensAble
What it is: A fast 3D touch-enabled modelling programme for product designers and engineers.

London, UK, 7th December 2010. In a new partnership deal with SensAble Technologies, leading 3D production and technology company Inition will be re-selling the latest version of the FreeForm 3D Modeling System. Freeform is a fast 3D touch-enabled modeling programme for product design. The software streamlines the digital workflows for both designers and engineers who create complex, highly-detailed, organic shapes for manufacturing.

The FreeForm Modeling System allows product designers with hard-to-manufacture goods, including toys, collectibles, patient-specific implants, jewelry, coins and other highly sculptural works, to get products to manufacturing far more efficiently. In addition to new design functionality, the software includes advanced tools that enable designers to analyze how easily their models can be manufactured – reducing engineering reviews, design iterations and time consuming retooling costs.

Inition has been working with SensAble Technologies for the past 10 years, reselling their Haptics range of devices. The Freeform Modeling System is now available at Inition’s central London technology suite complete with the PHANTOM Omni hardware. For the first time the high end PHANTOM Premium 1.5/6DOF hardware is also on site at Inition, contact the office to set up a taster demo.

Inition worked with The Gadget Show to create and drive an avatar of the show's presenter Suzi Perry using markerless motion capture in the world's first virtual presenter face-off.

Suzi Perry was tracked live at Inition’s central London showroom with our new LILA markerless motion capture system and the data was streamed over the internet to drive Suzi's avatar in real time in the Gadget Show’s Birmingham television studio.

Jason Bradbury went up against virtual Suzi as a robotic version of himself, and both presenters were controlled live from hundreds of miles away in opposite directions, all brought together and filmed in real time by the talented teams behind the Gadget Show and Inition.

Using Inition's LILA system, a mobile markerless tracking system based on Organic Motion software and hardware, 14 cameras were used to track Suzi’s movements. Her avatar reacted in real time to the robot and presenters in the TV studio, allowing Suzi to present the show without even being there.

Inition has been in Berlin and Brighton, shooting skateboarding veteran Tony Hawk on his European tour. Working with Boomerang Productions, Inition shot Tony giving press interviews and performing skate tricks at a number of locations including performances on the vert ramp, Europe’s largest half pipe.

Inition shot everything on Toshiba 1080i cameras, a compact lightweight mini-cam ideal for this type of shoot where the set-up needs to be ultra mobile to capture this fast paced sport. Nano Flash Recorders were attached and a StereoBrain Processor for live monitoring and alignment adjustments.

On the Berlin shoot 3 camera positions were adopted, two opposing ramp side positions and one at the flat of the half pipe to give good overall coverage of the action. On the ramp side a Polecam rig was used to position the camera high above the ramp and capture those classic 3D shots where the skater appears to be jumping out of the screen. A Fig Rig was also used to allow flexible movement and a full range of camera shots from all positions. The 3D footage was used to create a half hour TV programme which aired on French TV channel Canal + in October.

The inauguration of Thinglab Australia was cemented by the 3D scanning of a prehistoric lungfish for Dr. John Long, Head of Science Museum Victoria. The discovery of these fossils has turned the science world on its head as it is the earliest known example of any creature giving birth to live young (no eggs!), 150 million years before the dinosaurs. To support the announcement of the discovery, Museum Victoria needed a video of the lungfish giving birth - but how to get video footage of a 375 million year old fish?

Melbourne based Reel Pictures turned to Thinglab to create a mesh from a sculpted model (or maquette). The delicate polymer clay sculpt was scanned by Thinglab’s Australian branch with great results using a Mephisto Complete / Rapidform pipeline. The resulting mesh was then textured and animated at Reel Pictures to create the finished clip for the media release.

Inition support Stereoscopic Autodesk Lustre Launch

With 3D the latest buzz-word in the film industry, software developers are racing to include stereoscopic capabilities in their products and one of the first cabs off the rank is Autodesk. They recently announced Lustre 2009, a color grading digital intermediate package that now grades in, you guessed it, stereoscopic 3D. It’s not just a bolt-on 3D solution, it’s completely integrated into the interface so that anything you can do in 2D can be accomplished in 3D and previewed in realtime 2K.

When they were looking to launch the product with a roadshow, Autodesk came to Inition for hardware support, which we were only too happy to give. The event took place at Sydney’s Grace Hotel on 9th December. After delivering a presentation to the audience on the hardware solutions available from Inition, a True3Di Monitor was made available to demonstrate the possibilities of professional 3D monitoring for post production.

All in all, the roadshow was a great success and we can only applaud as another tool is added to the stereoscopic film maker’s toolbelt.

Inition is proud to support the European Space Agency and NASA on their new Mars Joint Exploration Initiative.
The program will launch the first European Mars Rover in 2018 to search for signs of life on the red planet.

Inition has just completed the install of a state-of-the-art Intersense Vistracker at EADS Astrium, the number one European company for space programmes. EADS Astium is developing the Exo (Biology) Mars Rover for the ESA, which continues on from their successful developments for the International Space Station and the Galileo programmes.

Earlier this year, after having considered and dismissed several motion tracking systems as being unsuitable for their Mars yard facility, EADS Astrium contacted Inition with their requirements. Inition's Jeff Ferguson specified an Intersense IS-1200 Vistracker install as suitable, with added flexibility, accuracy, and affordability. Last month, this was installed at the Mars Yard at the EADS Astrium site, and is currently supporting the development of the Rover Navigation functions.

Mercedes Supercar goes 3D

Inition worked with Axis Films and In© to create a content campaign for Mercedes’ new SLS AMG in 3D. The film is the centrepiece of a £1 million campaign for the new gullwinged supercar; it features ex-Formula One driver David Coulthard, who drove the car at speeds of up to 165mph along a closed section of the Isle of Man TT course.

In© is an agency that uses freelance editorial talent to create broadcast, digital and print content. In© came up with the concept of filming the car on part of the TT Motorcycle course on the Isle of Man using ex-racing driver David Coulthard. The media taking this film includes Sky 3D, Sunday Times, Metro, Fifth Gear (Channel 5 and Discovery) and Wired.

Geoff Boyle was overall DP on the shoot: "I was brought in to this shoot as the overall DP and stereo consultant/stereographer. I worked with Pete & Jeremy to establish how we should do this and who we should get to supply facilities. Campbell Goodwille and Geoff Harrison were both brought in for additional stereography expertise.”

Andy Millns, Director, Inition commented: “We provided a range of production services supplying one of the main camera systems, and providing technical expertise and stereography. We worked closely with HFS (Helicopter Film Services) who provided the helicopter and stabilised 3D mount and the pursuit vehicle with stabilised arm which took our SI2Ks. It was a great collaboration between ourselves and Axis (On Sight), two of the leading UK suppliers of 3D and we are looking to pool our resources on a number of projects.”

For the launch of the BBC’s flagship Saturday night TV show Merlin, Inition were briefed to recreate the magic of the show using our MagicSymbol technology, for a joint cinema and website download campaign.

Installed in 10 cinemas across the UK, Merlin MagicSymbol Kiosks wowed thousands of cinema-goers with magical animation and exclusively shot video content featuring actor Colin Morgan in the title role.

Over the 3 week cinema campaign period MagicSymbol was deemed a highly successful campaign when compared to other marketing campaigns in the same environment, with 45% of cinema goers directly interacting with the Merlin MagicSymbol installation. Sample the magic yourself by downloading the software here (PC+webcam+printer required), or on the BBC’s Merlin site.

Inition does the time warp. Bringing old stereo 3D back to life.

The US navy’s Australian tour was big news back in 1908 - so big that a legendary Aussie pioneering stereographer was there to capture the parades, streamers and unusual propensity for hatwearing of our ancestors. The original stereographs consist of a pair of stereo images that were originally viewed in a simple handheld device to create the 3D effect. 100 years on, many of the images had faded or suffered damage, destroying the stereoscopic effect. Inition Asia-Pacific has restored 40 of the original photographs and repurposed the content so that it can be seen - without 3D glasses - on a Phillips WowVX screen in full 3D for the anniversary of the "Great White Fleet’s" arrival on our shores.

Inition debuts Organic Motion markerless motion capture

Inition is proud to offer to the market the world's first markerless motion capture system.
If that wasn't news enough, the system also works in real time, and captures performers or the public in their street clothing.

This innovation truly brings motion capture to the people. Previously the nearest the public might have got to the process was the DVD 'making of' extras for the latest hollywood blockbuster. Now the process that brought Gollum to life in the Lord of the Rings trilogy has been brought down to earth. Companies and individuals with no previous experience can now purchase a system for anything their imagination can dream of.

PERFUME Augmented Reality

Inition recently created an augmented reality campaign for leading international perfumery Givaudan. Working with Amigo, Inition produced a 3D animation to showcase their perfume and the main ingredients that go into creating the fragrance. The campaign was shown in June on a large screen at Givaudan’s perfume symposium in Cannes.

Using Inition’s MagicSymbol application, the user holds up their invitation card to the webcam to start the animation. A perfume bottle appears and the lid pops off to reveal a misty aroma followed by four of the main perfume ingredients: Mimosa, Bergamot, Iris & Jasmin. All the ingredients then circle the bottle to demonstrate how the fragrance is created and then fall back into the bottle to form the key notes of the perfume. The bottle fades out to reveal Givaudan’s animated logo and strap line “Givaudan – Engaging the Senses”.

Inition worked with Red Bee Media to produce a 3D advert for new celebrity game show ‘Scream If You Know The Answer’. The advert replicates the experience of a rollercoaster ride and incorporates the adrenaline-fuelled theme of the quiz show.

‘Scream If You Know The Answer’ is new to UKTV's Watch channel and features celebrities battling it out quiz show style whilst being flung around on a variety of Thorpe Park rides.

Inition shot the footage on the Colossus ride at Thorpe Park. The camera system was secured to the front of the ride using a mounting system designed and built by Extreme Facilities. The recording equipment was housed inside a test dummy to comply with health and safety requirements. The 3D footage was then finished using Inition’s Iridas SpeedGrade system.

The 3D advert screened in cinemas nationwide, to coincide with the release of 3D film 'Clash of the Titans'. The advert will also be shown during Sky's 3D football matches at 1,200 pubs.

Inition Helps Develop Robotic Hand for MoD

Inition recently assisted Shadow Robot Company in the development of a robotic hand for the Ministry of Defence.

Inition supplied the motion capture equipment and expert advice to help Shadow Robot develop the teleoperation for their Motor Hand. The complex robotic hand allows bombs to be defused remotely over a wireless connection.

The Ministry of Defence has been testing the equipment for the past 6 months and is excited by the possibilities provided by the Robotic Hand technology, which could see active duty in the new year.

There is great interest in further utilisation of the system for handling of other hazardous materials in the medical and nuclear fields. Far-reaching uses also include repairs to space vehicles and particle accelerators. For more information on how Inition can help in these areas, please contact Jeff Ferguson

In an Australian first, the Socceroos game on May 24th against the New Zealand All Whites was the first 3D programming to hit Australian TV screens. A fitting tribute to Australia’s premier football team, the friendly match at the MCG was a great send-off to the team as they leave to begin their World Cup campaign in South Africa.

The game was captured using 5 Element Technica Camera Rigs – 5 at pitch level, and 1 in the stands. Inition worked with Panavision to pull together the 3D camera systems and crewing as well as consulting on the 3D graphics and convergence pulling during the match.

The signals from the cameras were mixed live in the OB van provided by Global Television and transmitted live to air. Inition’s SB-1 Stereobrain Processors were used for monitoring and encoding the signal for broadcast. The broadcast also made use of the brand new Sony MPE-200’s tracking and stabilization boxes ahead of their debut on the World Cup in South Africa. Used on most camera positions, the MPE-200’s stabilize zoom tracking for the rigs with variable focal lengths.

Israel’s largest tele-communications group Bezeq, hosted a live performance on London’s Southbank over the bank holiday weekend which was broadcast live in 3D on a fixed line, to Tel Aviv. Organised by Promarket, the live show consisted of acrobatic performances from the Chinese Circus and was screened in front of the general public at Tel Aviv harbour to promote the capabilities of Bezeq's new broadband the “next generation network” (NGN).

Inition and Done and Dusted (a DCD Media Company) collaborated to film the event in 3D featuring jugglers, acrobats, street performers and musicians. The live transmission was the first to use Telegenic’s brand new 3D OB Truck and was broadcast on two giant screens at the Tel Aviv Harbour.

The event gave live audiences in Tel Aviv a 3D perspective of the action unfolding in London and was watched by over 100,000 people and was also covered by national press and media.

Ran Guron, VP Marketing at Bezeq said: “We wanted to showcase the power and capabilities of Bezeq's advanced Web technology. To bring one country to another in 3D using the NGN broadband demonstrates our world leading ultra high speed internet service.”

Andy Millns, Director at Inition commented: "Our first collaboration with Done and Dusted proved a great success with over 24 hours of live 3D transmissions over the weekend. It was also great to work with Telegenic again after our first 3D collaboration at Abbey Road Studios over a year ago."

Simon Pizey, Managing Director of Done and Dusted commented: “It was great to do our first collaboration with Inition in what we hope will be the start of a lot of multi camera 3D shoots over the next year.”

This year’s Top Gear Live show hosted by Jeremy Clarkson was given an interactive makeover with help from Inition, allowing the audience to participate directly in the show for the first time.

We have worked closely with the show's producers for the last three years, bringing cutting edge technology to the show. Previously we have been responsible for the large-screen stereoscopic 3D section of the show, last year creating a 3D animated dragon to do battle with the Stig (the show’s in-house driver). This year, we decided to pitch something completely different: giving the five thousand strong audience a chance to participate directly in the show.

Two elements were devised that would allow the audience to vote on the coolest cars and try their skills in a timed lap around the legendary Top Gear track. Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to beat the lap time of Lewis Hamilton or Jamie Oliver or have their say on what they thought of the Morgan AeroMax?

World's Largest Interactive Live Audience Car Game

Top Gear Live, the action-packed live version of the TV show, launched the first leg of its World Tour at Earls Court London this month alongside MPH The Prestige & Performance Motor Show. This year visitors can test drive two of the world’s hottest supercars using interactive technology produced by Inition, in what will be the world’s largest mass audience participation driving game.

The technology allows the audience to collectively compete in a racing car game live on two large screens. Vehicles are controlled by audience members individually holding up red or green cards to collectively steer either left or right. Speed is controlled by how much noise each side generates – the louder the audience shouts the faster the cars go.

Inition Bring Mass Audience Interaction to Top Gear Live

Project: Interactive Cool Wall for Top Gear Live World Tour
Client: Top Gear
What we provided: Platform for live audience interaction

Top Gear Live, the action-packed live version of the TV show, launched the first leg of its 2010 World Tour at Earls Court London earlier this month. This year the live show has been given another interactive makeover by Inition featuring a Mobile SMS Text competition and an interactive Cool Wall where the audience can rate cars and post comments.

The text-based competition is hosted by Inition and enables the crowd to text in answers to questions posed on the big screens on stage for a chance to win prizes. Top Gear’s Cool Wall also allows the audience to vote on whether cars are "cool" or "uncool" and post live comments which the presenters interact with. Inition also provides on-hand technical expertise to the International show which will play to over 300,000 spectators across seven cities around the world in the forthcoming months.

On previous shows Inition has worked with the show's producers to create a 3D animated dragon to do battle with the Stig. Last year Inition created the world’s largest mass audience participation driving game consisting of two on-screen supercars which were collectively steered left or right by audience members holding up red or green cards, with speed controlled by how much noise each side made – the louder the audience the faster the cars go.

This is now the fifth year in which Inition has collaborated with Top Gear Live to bring cutting edge interactive technology to the show format. Inition is involved at every stage of the project from concept development through to technology provision, customising software, content creation and programming.
Top Trumps Leaps into 3D Action

Popular children's card game Top Trumps launched its first ever 3D collection at Hamleys Toy Store, London. The new 3D packs use Inition’s MagicSymbol technology and extends game play to an interactive on-screen experience.

Players simply hold the cards in front of a web cam and MagicSymbol technology unlocks immersive 3D augmented content, posing new questions and displaying live stats as the player interacts with the computer. The first Top Trumps game to go 3D was Bugs where a life-size tarantula literally jumps out of the players hand. Inition did all the 3D CGI work and animated the characters to enable user interaction and control.

3D versions of Horrible Histories, WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), Transformers 2, Star Trek, Ben 10 Alien Force and Spongebob Squarepants are out next.

Toyota MagicSymbol Promotes Hybrid Technology

Toyota have deployed Inition’s MagicSymbol technology at the Sydney Motor Show to reveal the inner workings of their hybrid cars. With a brief to create an engaging experience that would convey the benefits of hybrid vehicles, Inition worked with marketing agency George P. Johnson to create a range of MagicSymbol animations describing the many advantages of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive.

The results were so impressive Toyota elected to use MagicSymbol as part of the "media reveal" which included Australia’s first look at the new Hybrid Camry. Displayed on a massive four metre screen, up to five hundred journalists were able to view the inner workings of a Toyota Prius interactively displayed using MagicSymbol technology.

MagicSymbol Utilised to Promote Toyota IQ

For the promotion of the new Toyota IQ Inition worked with digital agency Glue to create an interactive experience that engaged viewers.

Further development of MagicSymbol enabled the campaign to utilise new features, more effectively communicating Toyota’s brand message. To convey how much had been packed into the new IQ, an exploded view using over 200 separate parts of the IQ was animated, and in the end product, activated by rotating the card in front of the camera. To create the sensation of driving Inition set the directional tilting of the MagicSymbol card to enable the user to drive the IQ in a road setting that supports the dynamic visuals of Toyota’s new IQ campaign.
